Te Umu ki Rangituhi - Social Supermarket
A huge turnout for the opening of Te Umu ki Rangituhi on Thursday morning - the first Social Supermarket in the heart of Porirua. The project is the product of a partnership Ngāti Toa’s Social Services team Te Roopu Awhina, led by Steve Johnson and Foodstuffs.

Starting small to assist those in our community, this is just one of many non-commercial services funded from the growth Ngati Toa’s broader mahi. Unlike foodbanks that provide kai to those in need in our community, the ability to actually shop, and being able to choose makes a massive difference to people, and creates opportunities to korero and find out more about what they are dealing with. The innovate points system used to transact the goods is really positive, we especially love the fact that women’s sanitary products have a ‘0 points’ label!
